If they choose to make a 3D cell model in the form of an open-faced PB&J, that will be great, as long as it is properly labeled. I can give the students a sense of competence through attributional statements, such as “You’ve been having wonderful discussions on cellular function I’m impressed at how thoroughly you understand the material you read." I cannot give total autonomy on this project, (for example, the students need to make a 3D cell they cannot receive full points for making a PB&J sandwich) but I want to give as much autonomy as possible: depending on my class, I may allow them to make their cell using whatever media they choose, or, if my class needs a lot more scaffolding, I may provide step-by step instructions, as seen here. The project is based in Self Determination Theory (SDT), which insists that I create an environment in which the learners feel competence, autonomy, and relatedness (Eggen & Kauchak, 2007). ![]()
